President Bush on First Ground Tour of New Orleans

Cars that were previously submerged become visible
as the flood water recedes

September 12, 2005

President Bush is visiting the Gulf Coast for the third time since Hurricane Katrina made landfall, but this time he will do a land tour.

Bush will be taken through some areas of New Orleans on Monday, September 12th, so he can see first hand some of the destruction and flood damage that has occurred.

Bush arrived in the area aboard the USS Iwo Jima, which is the command center for federal relief efforts.

President Bush was welcomed by Cosat Cuard Vice Admiral That Allen, the new head of Katrina relief efforts; military operations chief Lt. General Russell Honore; and Ray Nagin, the Mayor of New Orleans.

Bush will also travel to Gulfport, Mississippi, which was one of the hardes hit cities in Mississippi, on Monday.

Bush has been heavily criticized for an extremely slow and saliently inadequate response to Hurricane Katrina by the federal government.. Harsh criticism has also been directed at the director of FEMA, Michael Brown, who was recently replaced as the head of the relief effort (but not as director of FEMA); Kathleen Blanco, the Governor of Louisiana, and Ray Nagin, the Mayor of New Orleans.

Bush’s approval rating now sits at an all-time-low of 39 percent, according to an AP-lpsos poll.
